Many home users face this decision after buying an EV: use only the included portable charging head (a travel charger) or spend extra on a dedicated AC station? In fact, each has strengths, and they can even complement each other.
Portable charging head (usually single-head, some with coiled cords) is plug-and-play. It works with a standard household socket (220V 10A/16A), no professional installation. Power typically 1.8kW-3.5kW, adding 15-30 km of range per hour. Ideal for rural houses, apartments without fixed parking, or frequent travelers. Downsides: slower speed – fully charging a 60kWh EV takes about 20 hours.
AC charging station (wallbox or pedestal) requires professional installation, power typically 7kW (single-phase) or 11/22kW (three-phase). Charging speed is 2-4 times faster than portable, adding 40-80 km per hour, full charge in 4-8 hours. Perfect for families with dedicated parking, villas, or garages. AC stations can also be paired with coiled/spring cables to keep things tidy.
How to choose?
Daily mileage <50km and you don’t need fast top-ups → portable charger alone is enough, zero installation cost.
Daily mileage >80km or you want to use overnight off-peak rates → strongly recommend an AC station – it saves time and is kinder to battery longevity (steady 7kW slow charging is better than very low power for many hours).
Best combo: AC station at home, portable in the trunk. Keep a portable charger (preferably with a spring cord) in your car for trips – it eliminates range anxiety without adding much weight.
Product tip: If you frequently coil and uncoil the cable, choose spring/coiled cord designs for either portable heads or AC station gun connectors. They retract automatically, prevent abrasion, and are ideal for cramped garages.
